: Ireland Reaching Out genealogy project

From NEHGS newsletter

A Note from the Editor: Ireland Reaching Out Diaspora Project

by Lynn Betlock, Editor
I recently learned about the Ireland Reaching Out (Ireland XO) Diaspora project. According to the group's website, "the Ireland XO project is based on a simple idea; instead of waiting for Irish-Americans and their global counterparts to come to Ireland to trace their roots, we go the other way. Working through voluntary effort at a townland, village and parish level, we identify who left, and trace them and their descendants worldwide, proactively engaging with them and inviting them to become part of an extended 'virtual' community with their place of origin. In this way, the entire Irish Diaspora of 70 million can be systematically reunified online and invited back to engage with their ancestral parish for the benefit of all. . . . "
"While Ireland XO parish volunteers are reaching out around the world, the project's website provides a landing point in Ireland for people abroad who have some detail about where their emigrant ancestors come from in Ireland. By joining any parish community online, they can seek direct genealogical research assistance from local people in the area who also volunteer to meet them on their return. This "Meet/Greet/Connect" offer from parish communities across Ireland has been identified as a missing element from developing the Irish Diaspora in times past." A successful pilot already occurred in South-East Galway and the project was launched as a "National Diaspora Programme" in March 2012.
I'm very intrigued by this project. Instead of a descendant tracing one ancestor back to a place of origin, this model has the impetus for the search coming from the place of origin, with a goal of reconstructing the essence of a long-vanished community. This effort reminds me of the numerous and very popular old settlers organizations and Old Home weeks held in New England and elsewhere in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. (For an article on this topic, see "Tracking Migrating Families: The Records of Old Settlers Organizations," by Paula Stuart Warren in the winter 2010 issue of American Ancestors.) In the Internet age, it will be fascinating to see what kinds of genealogical and historical connections can be made on a group level across time and distance.

U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedules

More adventures in Ancestry.

About Selected U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedules, 1850-1880

This database contains U.S. federal non-population schedules from 1850-1880 for the following states:

  • Alabama
  • California
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Maine
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Nebraska
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • Washington Territory

Non-population schedules contained in this database include agriculture,industry/manufacturerssocial statistics, and supplemental schedules. For mortality schedules, see this related database: U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1880.

In general, data recorded on the non-population schedules covered one year exactly (beginning and ending on June 1) preceding the year of enumeration. The information requested on each schedule changed throughout the years, so you may not necessarily find the same information on the same schedule type for different years.

About the Records:

Agriculture Schedules

Agricultural schedules are useful for both historians and family historians, providing an overall view of the agricultural state of the nation. These schedules recorded statistics on farms, plantations, and market gardens, listing the names of owners, agents, and managers. The type of statistics recorded included the total acreage of land, the value of the farm, machinery and livestock, amount of staples (wool, cotton, grain, etc.) produced, and the value of animals slaughtered, etc. In 1880 farm operators were classified as owner, tenant, or sharecropper.

Industry/Manufacturers Schedules

Industry schedules are useful for illustrating the industrial and technological development of the country. These schedules collected information about manufacturing, mining, fishing, and mercantile, commercial, and trading businesses with an annual gross product of $500 or more. The schedule lists the name of each corporation, company, or individual, a description of the type of business, amount of capital invested, the quantity and value of resources used, the quantity of yearly production, and the number of individuals hired, etc. In 1870 distinctions were made between child and adult labor. In 1880 companies were classified into categories.

Social Statistics and Supplemental Schedules

Social statistics schedules compiled from 1850 to 1880 contain three items of specific interest for the genealogist: (1) The schedules list cemetery facilities within city boundaries, including maps with cemeteries marked; the names, addresses, and general description of all cemeteries; procedures for interment; cemeteries no longer functioning; and the reasons for their closing. (2) The schedules also list trade societies, lodges, clubs, and other groups, including their addresses, major branches, names of executive officers, and statistics showing members, meetings, and financial worth. (3) The schedules list churches, including a brief history, a statement of doctrine and policy, and a statistical summary of membership by county.

Other information recorded on the social statistics schedules include the aggregate value of property, a breakdown of taxes paid, a list of schools, colleges, and academies with their numbers of teachers and students, a list of libraries and their number of books, a list of newspaper and periodicals published within a community, the number of paupers supported by the community, the number of criminals convicted within the previous year, and the number of convicts in jail.

In 1880 a supplemental schedule, called Dependent, Defective, and Delinquent Classes, was included. This schedule listed by name the insane, idiots, deaf mutes, blind, paupers, indigent persons, homeless children, and prisoners. In addition to the individual's name, their race, gender, age, residence, and medical information may have been recorded. This schedule is not included in this database, but can be searched here.

Some of the above information was taken from Loretto Dennis Szucs and Matthew Wright, "Census Records" in The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy, ed. Loretto Dennis Szucs and Sandra Hargreaves Luebking (Provo, UT: Ancestry, 2006).

Saturday

I had been meaning to visit the Ashland Coffee and Tea Company
( http://ashlandcoffeeandtea.com/  ) down in Ashland, VA and finally yesterday I did it! Lanny Fields  (  http://www.sixwatergrog.com/  ) one of the participants in the Blue and Grey (Lee's Retreat)
http://www.blueandgraybrewingco.com/ ) Wednesday Jam session has been sending out reminders via email, and on Facebook, about the Old Timey and Celtic session held at Ashland Coffee. This Saturday was kind of a rainy day and a perfect day to do chores, but why do that when you can hang out and hear great music, so that is what I did! I was delighted to see perhaps three dozen cyclists, in their funny shorts and shoes, using the cafe as a refreshment and relief station when I arrived. The coffee shop is just perfect, with sofas and a mini library. The back room is quite large with a music stage. Sadly, not many people came just to listen to the jam, but there were plenty of great musicians. Lanny was on banjo, and several fiddlers and guitarists were playing, and to my surprise, two had autoharps. One guy even whipped out the Jaw Harp (or Jew's Harp). I'm glad I was able to make the trip, and I even saw a guy that I'm always bumping into in the Fredericksburg coffee shops http://www.hyperionespresso.com/ , so this place is known outside of my little Mayberry. Very cool.

Later I had a chance to see a benefit concert by AON (http://www.aonband.com/fr_home.cfm ), down in Warrenton, to benefit Sparrow's Nest. http://www.sparrowsrest.org/ AON's banjoist, Jeff, belongs to the Methodist congregation ( http://www.bethelumc.com/  ) out in Warrenton, and his son Nathan Krauss is an Eagle Scout candidate. He is building benches to seat 80 people at the farm Sparrow's Rest is developing. The non-profit organization helps get older kids in the foster system to develop independent living skills and work on their emotions and behaviors, with equine therapy. My cousin Jack out in Kansas City, Missouri volunteer his time with equine therapy. Nathan's monetary goal was very nearly met with the concert, and he has all the permits lined up for the construction. It sounds like a very worthy cause. Anything that contributes to young children breaking out of a cycle of dependence, and becoming employable and productive is a benefit. According to the information given at the concert, too many kids drop out of school and never even achieve a GED. With society having scarce jobs for college graduates, what is the future if you don't even have a GED? Public assistance, living in hotels, depression, drug addiction, not much hope. This organization seems like a real winner.

I took lots of videos and pictures of AON, as one of their members is returning to his home country of Chile, and I want to have something to remember him by. When I get time, I've got to string them into a little concert film and transfer it to a DVD.

After the concert, we had a short pint at a local Irish pub and got home just in time to have some salmon at an El Salvadoran restaurant. After that, I enjoyed part of a Korean film on Netflix about cyborgs. The film was set in 2077 and was very well done technically. Unfortunately couldn't keep my eyes open to watch all the cool action and read the subtitles, so I'll have to finish that film later.
